Transforming the Freshman Mindset

Transforming the Freshman Mindset
Caitlin Gilman, University of North Carolina Charlotte

Freshmen come to us with a lot of fear and anxiety, especially when entering a math class. They are moving from adolescence to young adulthood and need a lot of mental help and support to make the transition, especially while navigating the college environment at the same time. With only limited contact with students and the pressure to complete all the course content, instructors have to have quick, unique ways to help students with these mental challenges. This talk will identify the common mindsets of freshmen and show quick, easy ways to integrate tools to address these mindsets and create a more calming environment for students. I will also discuss a project where we incorporated larger mindset activities into our students' contact hours of the course.
